Sugar Bay scuba diving - a reason for your vacation
Snuba provides the perfect alternative to Scuba diving. No heavy equipment or lengthy instruction. Air hoses attached to a raft on the surface allow you to stay underwater for 45 minutes without having to surface for air. Diving to approximately 18 feet. The price at Coki Point on St. Thomas includes the entrance to Coral World Marine Park. This adventure is also available on St. John at Trunk Bay for $65.00 per person plus $4.00 park fee. Table Top - The chance to visit this site is fairly rare as sea conditions have to be just right. But on those days, most often in the summer and fall, when winds are light and the current slack, the boat can be anchored off the north shore of St Thomas in about 35 feet of water. Immediately surrounding Table Top is open ocean, attaining depths of approximately 90 feet and allowing for the possibility of sighting big pelagic fish and mammals swimming by. Divers descend the anchor rode to a shallow pinnacle swarmed by colorful reefish and explore for critters hidden in the myriad nooks and crannies. Carval Rock - One dark and stormy night late in the 17th century, the captain of a pirate ship expended a great deal of gunpowder hurling cannonball after cannonball at an apparently disabled but unsinkable fighting ship known as a Carval. As the storm finally subsided at sunrise, the dismayed and embarrassed pirates realized that the large, looming shape bearing the scars of their cannonballs was not an inert Carval ship but a rather imposing rock formation. Now known as Carval Rock, this spectacular dive sight rewards divers with sheer walls, huge boulders, and canyons alive with vibrant sponges and corals as well as soft coral fields. Dozens of tarpon lurk within rivers of minnows in the shallow waters in the spring and summer months, while colorful reef fish, lobsters, eels, octopus, squid and turtles linger near their favorite hiding spots throughout the year. Sharks, spotted eagle rays and even a manta ray occasionally 'wow' our divers. Although this site allows for dives as shallow as 20 feet or as deep as 80 feet and is one of our most requested, moderate currents make it most suitable for certified divers. Congo Cay - A favorite site with the dive staff, advanced divers and even beginners working on their referral dives towards certification. Above water, the island is home to magnificant frigate birds, tropic birds, boobies and laughing gulls. While submarine, the mooring rests on a sandy floor only 30 feet below the surface, perfect for easy descents and students working on dive skills. The south face of the island remains shallow and teems with schools of colorful reef fish and healthy corals. In spring months, minnows and tarpon swim through coloful canyons created by abutting cliffs and bolders. Certified divers also enjoy the north side of the island where the sea floor, covered in lush soft coral, is home to eels, lobsters, turtles, nurse sharks and myriad reef fish and drops to a sandy bottom at 80 feet. Lucky divers may even glimpse a manta ray.
